Yammer External Groups Feature Now Available

Microsoft today turned on a new “external groups” collaboration feature in its Yammer enterprise social networking service.

The external groups feature permits Yammer collaboration with people outside an organization. It can be used today by those who have Yammer group creation privileges, according to Microsoft’s announcement. The creation of Yammer external groups requires approval by a group administrator.

Yammer Enterprise edition is needed to use the external groups feature. It doesn’t work with Yammer Basic.

Security

Security controls are enabled through Exchange Transport Rules for configuring Exchange Online, according to an Office 365 support article. It doesn’t work for premises-based Exchange Transport Rules if an organization lacks an Office 365 tenant.

An Update on ASP.NET Core and .NET Core

Microsoft decided to rename ASP.NET 5 to ASP.NET Core 1.0.  So ASP.NET 5 would be now ASP.NET Core 1.0, .NET Core 5 is now .NET Core 1.0 and Entity Framework 7 is now Entity Framework Core 1.0

Microsoft have been working towards “One ASP.NET” now for years and we’re there. ASP.NET Core is versioned as 1.0 as it’s a near complete rewrite of ASP.NET with many new features and capabilities.

ASP.NET Core 1.0 is not a continuation of ASP.NET 4.6. It is a whole new framework, a side-by-side project which happily lives alongside everything else we know. It is an actual re-write of the current ASP.NET 4.6 framework, but much smaller and a lot more modular.

Microsoft Rolling Out New Office 365 Reporting Portal

Microsoft described a new “reporting portal” that’s rolling out as early as today for Office 365 subscribers.

This reporting portal shows user activity within the Office 365 Admin Center, which is the new management portal for organizations that Microsoft began turning on for its subscribers earlier this month. The older “classic” management portal is being replaced by the Office 365 Admin Center.

Microsoft Releases Preview of Azure Active Directory Identity Protection

Microsoft today released a preview of its new Azure Active Directory Identity Protection service.

Microsoft is promising that Azure AD Identity Protection will help ward off compromised user accounts and configuration vulnerabilities. The preview is an application that can be added from the Azure Marketplace collection of apps using the Azure management portal.

This service needs to be set up by an organization’s global administrator. It’s available to subscribers to Microsoft’s Enterprise Mobility Suite and/or the Azure Active Directory Premium service. Alternatively, the preview can be tested using a 30-day Azure Active Directory Premium trial account.
